The week after the graduation ceremony Dover Girl got her first tattoo on her thirty eighth birthday. Before she went to the tattoo studio she had a drink of red wine after visiting a small local art gallery. She took her tattoo design with her. It was a scan from an old 80s magazine that she’d kept since a child. Dover Girl made the day special and full of activities. Later, she planned to see an old Uni friend.

Krazee Ink! was the studio. It was close to the college and several of her students had been inked there so she knew the quality of the tattoos. Dover Girl’s design was an angel with a broken left wing; he was spiralling down to a burning landscape that was occupied by a volcano that looked like Vesuvius. Dover Girl had visited that volcano seven times. The artwork had once been in a small chapel that had since been destroyed by a lava flow during the 1942 eruption. All that survived was photos.

There down by the river

Is where it all happens

They took the towns folk

And popped them

One by one by one

Full families falling together

Floating down stream

Blocking the river in the shallows

An undeniable deniable act

This was just one river

It was war of the Worlds

Not aliens but between us...
