A Selfless Dog (based on a real incident that was video taped)

A Selfless Dog (based on a real incident that was video taped)

His owners drove him a long long way away. They abandoned him. It was obvious they never loved him. Now he had to find somewhere safe to live. But where?

The medium sized brown dog wanted to cross the Freeway. It was very busy with vehicles whizzing on by, many breaking the speed limit. It wasn't rush hour yet but they all had some place to go.

The dog whined and looked both ways. His little head this way and that. The metal monsters were only feet from him. Line after line of them over four lanes. He needed to cross!

Seeing a gap he went. His little feet went like lightning. He crossed three lanes before trouble got him. It was a small blue Japanese Datsun Cherry driven by a careless lazy college student that hit the dog.

The dog went under the car rather than the wheels. He cartwheeled over the asphalt nose to tail then was still. He was at the side of the Freeway so no more cars hit him. The poor dog didn't move. Was he dead? Other cars and trucks sped on by, uncaring and unseeing.

Another dog, a white spaniel, was on the grass by the crash barrier. He lived in the trees where no humans bothered him. Before, they called him names shouted and threw rocks at him. Under the trees he ate small mice and drank rain water off pants. There was plenty of cover from the rain or hut sun.

He saw the cars and heard a distant yelp but never saw the accident. His eyes sought out the sound; he knew it was another dog in distress. Where?

It really hurt but not that much. Why didn't it hurt more? Luckily, it was only one car in the final lane not the middle of the road. Or he'd be squashed like a pancake. I want to sleep, he thought. It was so tempting. Nice silky blackness.

The spaniel barked three times. He wanted to get the other dog's attention so he could move to safety. However, the other dog was lying down and never moved. Was he dead or hurt? He barked again as loud as he could.

Before the hurt dog drifted into sleep he thought he heard barking. Is that another dog? No, it can't be. This is the busy Freeway, no dog would be here. They'd be killed. He closed his eyes and felt sleep come for him.

The other dog got no return bark so he ran full speed to the dying dog. He must save him! Quick as a flash he darted over the Freeway to help the dog. He gripped the dog's neck and pulled him with his teeth. The dog was small but heavy. Cars braked and swerved and horns blared. The two dogs were in danger of being hit multiple times. It was an insane scene.

Later. The injured dog opened his eyes. His sight was blurred but he saw trees. And heard a bark. There was another dog! He wasn't alone. He had a saviour!

"Hi. I am Toby. I live here, in the trees. I heard your yelp," the rescue dog said.

"I'm Rendel. Thanks for rescuing and saving me. I almost died out there," the wounded dog replied. His voice was a whisper.

"Don't worry Toby. Everything will be fine," Rendel replied. He saw the other dog was fatally hurt.

"We can be friends now. I've always been alone here."

"I know. Thanks for rescuing and saving me. You're my friend. I'll stay here with you." The light went out in Toby's brown eyes as he died.

"Yes, I am your friend," whimpered the remaining dog. "The only friend I ever had now you're gone. Why oh why oh why!?" he cried. Alone again!
