Riga Cyclist

Riga Cyclist

Riga went in a bicycle ride. She headed out of town and up to the mountain roads. Here the traffic lessened as the road climbed up the hill to the top. Her bike was a mountain bike with twenty gears. It had a light but strong allow frame, racing hand grips, water bottle carrier and holder for her phone for navigation. The bike was sky blue. It was quite new and she did her own maintenance on it. She cycled up the steep road in low gear. Now and again vehicles passed her. This was a secondary route away from the city. Most traffic including heavy trucks took the motorways and main roads on the level plain from the city. It was faster and safer than the steep inclines. This was why Riga cycled here. It was both benign and gave good views. The top of the hill reached five hundred metres. The road twisted left and right following the land. It was built after World War 2 when the devastated city had been rebuilt. Before the motorways were built this was one of two major roads leading to the city. There had been talk of closing it but why shut something that was already built? Riga wore a pink and black cotton cycling top with number five on it. She had black leggings and white cycling shoes on plus a Yellow Nike baseball cap. The miles slowly passed as she made her way along the route. There was a small carpark and viewing area just ahead. She cycled over and took the time to rest and enjoy the scenery. Riga carefully parked her bike and took a drink of water. It had a stand so the paint wouldn’t scratch. She walked over to the wall and looked down. Here the road was atop a medium sized hill that levelled off. Where she was it headed into a wide valley. At the bottom part of the distant city was visible. There were factories, tower blocks and houses grey in the distant sun. Some of the windows brightly reflected the light. She took a photo with her phone and videoed the place she was for her vlog. Other cyclists and bikers were here chatting or watching the view. Riga greeted some then exercised her aching muscles to get rid of the tension. She drank more water and continued on her way. The road descended an incline then climbed up to a wider peak and looped round to the south west. Here it met the plain and a large town. From start to her was a distance of fifteen kilometres. She was just over half way there. On the way back, Riga could follow her original route or go back over the plain. This was easier on the legs but traffic was heavier. On the descent Riga overtook several cars that were doing over forty miles per hour. She was on the other side of the road which was clear for over a mile. She let rip and went to top gear. Crouching down she smiled and enjoyed the speed as she passed the vehicles. Her digital speedo showed almost seventy kilometres an hour. She cycled faster and reached eighty two! The cars were behind her and the incline twisted to the left. She slowed as she tackled the corner. It was a heady rush and she had to be careful. Then the road climbed up again to the wide peak top. From there another incline but not as steep or fast. Riga drank some water as she cycled. She would take the plain roads going back. She had to be mindful of the traffic there. It was a great day out…
