Portugal

We serviced then fueled up our motorcycles. We planned a route over the hills. I got paid well and had spare cash. This covered our bike service and fuel. We took ourselves, our bikes and supplies. There was a camp site up by the river. The river was clean and fast flowing. There was a side pool to swim in. This was safe as long as you remained in the pool away from the main stream. Only last year a swimmer left the pool and was swept downstream. He would have lived had the river not ended in a 600 feet waterfall. Our country’s highest. It had a deep plunge pool below it. Thirty feet of water there would ensure survival. As long as you never hit the rocks. He fell onto the rocks at terminal velocity. I don’t need to describe that. We finished packing and set off. My boyfriend had his own bike a BMW cruiser. Mine was a smaller 250cc built for a gal as I was a gal. It was fine on long distances. No big engine was needed. I’d done thousands of miles on my Kawasaki. This was a gift from my brother. I sprayed the tank and mudguard blue. I was on my third set of tires. They made good work of the winding open roads. We both wore nylon Belstaff bikers’ trousers and leather jackets. My helmet was purple with a metallic golden eagle on it. My lover had s red helmet with a white falcon on it. A friend painted both helmets then varnished them. My boyfriend led the way. We went around the town centre and took a side road. This led to the road that climbed up away from the town. There were light gray skies and no rain. Our speed was moderate. My fuel use was less than my boyfriend’s 750cc BMW. Our speed was between twenty and seventy depending on the road steepness. Uphill gradients got windy and steep. Downhill was thrilling but the bends were tricky. On the straight bits we could open up. He outpaced me but I did well enough. The views along the way were superb. At one stopping place on a hill we could see 270% of the horizon. The elevation was siz hundred metres. We are our sandwiches and drank hot coffee here. It was great. It was a little breezy. Our home town was miles away and a dark blob way below. Two other towns were just visible before the haze hid them. We continued our trip. It was before dusk when we arrived at the camp site. The sun was low. We looked forward to relaxing at the site. We rented a two-person tent. The bikes were parked and we got changed. Beer time! After a meal of canned stew and buttered bread. His mum made the bread and it was fresh. Between us we went through three big tins of stew. These were made down south and were lovely. We saw back our small collapsible chairs and enjoyed the evening. Stars came out. Our beer was strong 8% Green Mango Juice. It wasn’t made of mangoes! Who thought up such names? We chatted about life, work, the future and stuff. A nice break away from our interesting yet pressured software jobs. This was what life was about. Just us, our bikes and the outdoors. We would swim at dawn. Naked in the clean river side pool. We would be careful and stay near the bank. Before then it was beer then making love!
