War Graves

War Graves
There up on the hill remain the hidden reminders of what went on there
Lost tunnels now half buried and covered by undergrowth
An old water collection system dammed form a stream
Broken pottery from dead soldiers' plates
Rusting spent bullets and abandoned tools
Old weapons now treasure to the serious collector
And most poignant of all the forgotten graves of the soldiers
Only God knows the number and where they lie
How they died is known to them and to Him
All of this is an example of war and its utter stupidity
Young men forever lost on a foreign battlefield
Sent here to fight and die by their government
Now remembered by nobody except me...
